How to Vet a Glass Bottle Supplier from China: A 9-Point B2B Checklist

A practical 9-point checklist for vetting Chinese glass bottle suppliers — factory vs trader, MOQ, testing reports, samples and lead times, from a manufacturer.

Glass bottles on a production line conveyor inside a factory, supplier audit context
Most problems with imported glass packaging — wrong neck sizes, broken shipments, "the sample was fine but the bulk order wasn't" — trace back to the same root: the supplier was never actually vetted. A polished Alibaba page is not verification.
We manufacture and export glass bottles and jars for a living, and we are also buyers' second, third or fifth supplier. Here is the checklist we would use in their position: nine checks that separate a real manufacturing partner from a pretty catalog.

1. Factory, trader, or both — and does the answer match your order?

[IMAGE PLACEHOLDER 1: Wide shot of glass production line with rows of amber bottles on conveyor (factory floor). To be replaced with a real photo before publishing.]
Pure factories are strong on custom molds but thin on variety; pure traders are the reverse. A factory-and-trading combine is common in Xuzhou's glass cluster: the factory behind it gives you production control, while the trading arm aggregates caps, pumps and decorations across lines.
How to check: ask what their own production lines produce versus what they source. We describe ourselves as a factory-and-trading combine with 7 production lines and 400,000+ bottles and jars per day (company-stated) — and we expect buyers to verify claims, not take them on faith. A video factory tour plus the specific line names is a reasonable ask.

2. Can they state MOQ per SKU, not just per company?

"We are a 10,000-piece MOQ factory" is a red flag in reverse: real catalogs have structure. Stock items, printed items and custom molds carry different minimums — ours run from 500 pcs on blank stock items to 2,000–5,000 pcs for decoration programs, with 100,000 pcs for fully custom shapes, confirmed per SKU.
A supplier who quotes one number for everything either doesn't know their own catalog or is averaging to win the inquiry. Ask for MOQ broken out by: blank stock / logo printing / custom shape / custom packaging.

3. Do they publish a real lead-time ladder?

Vet lead times by scenario, not by optimism: ready stock, decorated stock, and custom production each have a different clock. Ours: standard orders 7–15 days; samples 3–5 working days; decoration 7–15 working days. If a supplier quotes one number for all three, someone will be disappointed mid-project.

4. What does the sample actually prove — and what does it cost?

A sample policy tells you how a supplier treats pre-sales risk. Look for: a price that filters serious buyers but doesn't punish testing (ours is US$39 including shipping, refundable against the bulk order), a shipping window (3–5 working days for stock samples), and honesty about limits — a stock sample confirms shape, weight and closure fit; it does not prove decorated color or bulk consistency. Suppliers who oversell the sample will oversell the shipment too.

5. Testing reports: do they cite scope, or wave certificates?

[IMAGE PLACEHOLDER 2: Photo of third-party test report documents on a desk next to glass jar samples. To be replaced with a real photo before publishing.]
This is where due diligence earns its keep. Ask for third-party test reports and then read them like a buyer, not a marketer:
– Which sample? A report covers the tested sample, not an entire catalog.
– Which standard and method? e.g., EU 84/500/EEC heavy-metal migration, or US FDA C.P.G. 7117.06/07 with AOAC methods.
– Which lab and date?
We publish the honest version on our quality and testing page (/testing-quality): a 2015 Anbotek report for a 400 ml glass mason jar (extractable Pb <0.1 mg/L, Cd <0.01 mg/L against EU limits) and a 2018 Intertek report for a glass jar sample (leachable Pb <0.05 ppm, Cd <0.03 ppm against FDA C.P.G. limits). Historical, sample-scoped — and for current SKUs and markets, new reports are arranged per order. A supplier who says "all products certified, any standard" is telling you they haven't read their own reports.

6. Is decoration done in-house or brokered?

If your program includes printing, frosting or hot stamping, ask who runs the decoration line. Brokered decoration adds a handoff — and handoffs are where color drifts and delivery dates slip. In-house decoration with the factory's own QC department means one accountable party from glass to print. Our OEM/ODM program covers silk screen, hot stamping, frosting and custom colors in-house (custom packaging overview (/custom-packaging)).

7. What is actually in stock, today?

"Everything in stock" usually means "everything can be produced." Stock means pallets on the floor. Ask for the in-stock list with quantities and the photos to match. We maintain around 500,000 pcs in stock across ready-goods series (company-stated) and publish the in-stock program (/in-stock-products) — because stock is what makes a 7–15 day lead time real.

8. Do they export to your market as a habit?

Export experience is regulatory experience. A supplier shipping to the US and EU already handles the documents, carton markings and freight routines your market requires. We export to the USA, Germany, Canada, France, the UK, Sweden, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium (per company profile). Ask any supplier which of their current customers are in your market — not names, just counts and product types.

9. How fast — and how specifically — do they answer?

The inquiry reply is a preview of the whole relationship. A real supplier answers with SKUs, neck finishes, MOQ and lead time within a business day. A broker answers with a catalog PDF. Send a specific question — "30 ml amber Boston round, 20/400 neck, F217 liner, 5,000 pcs, what's your best lead time?" — and grade the reply on specifics, not speed alone. We commit to replying within one working day (contact (/contact)); grade us the same way.

FAQ

Is a trading company always worse than a factory?
No. For mixed programs (bottles from one line, pumps from another, boxes from a third), a trading arm with its own factory is often more practical than a single-line factory. What matters is knowing which parts are in-house.
How do I verify factory claims without visiting China?
Ask for a live video walkthrough of specific production lines, recent booking documents, and per-SKU MOQ/lead-time tables. Consistency across those three beats any certificate wall.
What should I test on a sample before scaling?
Neck finish fit with your closures, weight and stability, color against your brand references, and your actual product inside the glass — compatibility is product-specific.
Can I get fresh test reports for my specific SKU and market?
Yes — that is the correct ask. Reports are arranged per SKU and market at inquiry; historical reports support the factory's baseline capability, not your compliance file.
