Private label hair oil is one of the fastest-moving categories in beauty — and the brands that survive past their first production run are usually the ones that understood a distinction early: "private label" does not have to mean "custom mold". Most successful hair oil launches run on stock glass bottles with smart decoration, and only move to full custom once volume justifies it.
This guide maps the three tiers of custom hair oil packaging, what each tier actually costs in minimum order quantity and lead time, and how to sequence artwork, samples and production so a new brand launches without overcommitting.
The three tiers of "custom" hair oil packaging
1. Stock bottle + labels — What it is: Blank stock bottle, your adhesive labels; Typical MOQ baseline*: from 500 pcs on selected stock items; Best for: First launch, market testing.
2. Stock bottle + decoration — What it is: Stock shape, your printing, color or finish; Typical MOQ baseline*: 2,000–5,000 pcs; Best for: Growing brands, retail-ready look.
3. Custom mold — What it is: Your own shape, unique on the market; Typical MOQ baseline*: from 100,000 pcs; Best for: Established lines defending shelf space.
* Baselines, not promises — MOQ is confirmed per SKU at quotation. Blank stock availability changes with the season; the 500-pc tier applies to selected stock items.
The mistake new brands make is skipping Tier 1 because it feels less "real". It is real: Tier 1 gets you selling while you learn which claims, sizes and price points move. Tier 2 is where most private label hair oil brands live for years.
What you can customize on a stock dropper bottle

A stock bottle is not a generic bottle. On our dropper programs, decoration options include:
– Glass color. Colored glass is produced in the batch — cobalt blue, blush pink, emerald green, honey amber or clear on the colored dropper bottle program (/colored-glass-dropper-bottles-wholesale). The color is the glass, so it cannot chip or peel like a coating.
– Surface finish. Frosting gives the soft-touch satin look that photographs as premium — see the 1 oz and 2 oz frosted dropper bottles (/frosted-glass-dropper-bottles-wholesale). Spray coating adds solid brand colors over the glass.
– Closure finish. Aluminum dropper caps in gold, silver, black, matte or rose gold (on selected families) — a small change that visibly repositions the same bottle.
– Printing. Silk screen for durable logo and text; hot stamping for metallic foil marks. Both are covered in detail in our glass bottle printing guide (/posts/custom-glass-bottle-printing-options).
– Secondary packaging. Color boxes with foam or PVC inserts from 5,000 pcs — the unboxing step that separates a brand from a commodity.
Shape is the one axis that stays fixed at Tiers 1–2. If a sculptural silhouette matters to the brand story, spherical stock bottles (30 ml / 1 oz and 50 ml / 1.7 oz) deliver it without a mold — see the spherical dropper bottle program (/spherical-glass-dropper-bottles-wholesale).
What each tier really costs in time
Sample — Tier 1 (labels): 3–5 working days; Tier 2 (decoration): 3–5 working days + decoration proof; Tier 3 (custom mold): Mold development first.
Production — Tier 1 (labels): 7–15 days (stock); Tier 2 (decoration): 7–15 working days after artwork approval; Tier 3 (custom mold): Quoted individually.
Artwork — Tier 1 (labels): Print-ready labels; Tier 2 (decoration): Vector logo + Pantone codes; Tier 3 (custom mold): Full industrial design.
Two boundary notes: decorated orders start after artwork approval, so artwork quality moves your date more than the factory does; and fully custom shapes are a different conversation — our custom packaging program (/custom-packaging) covers OEM/ODM development with in-house product design, but it starts at volumes where a mold pays for itself.
The sample step: US$39 that saves a production run
[IMAGE PLACEHOLDER 2: Sample kit flat-lay: two glass dropper bottles with aluminum dropper caps and a sample information card on a workbench. To be replaced with a real photo before publishing.]
Before any decorated bulk order, order the sample kit: US$39 including shipping, refundable against the bulk order, shipping in 3–5 working days.
A stock sample confirms four things a catalog cannot:
1. How the oil looks inside the glass (color truth on your shelf, under your lighting).
2. Pipette length and drop behavior with your actual viscosity.
3. Closure fit and opening torque.
4. Total hand feel and weight — the thing customers notice first.
Test the sample with your real formula, not a substitute oil. Gasket compatibility and flow behavior differ more between formulas than brands expect, and they are confirmed against your sample before mass production rather than assumed from a spec sheet.
A realistic launch path for a private label hair oil brand
1. Week 1 — brief and sample. Send capacity, applicator and quantity requirements through the hair oil packaging page (/hair-scalp-care) or contact form (/contact); order the sample kit.
2. Week 2 — test and decide. Test the sample with your formula; lock size (1 oz / 30 ml is the standard serum size, 2 oz / 60 ml for pure oils), color and cap.
3. Week 3–4 — artwork and quote. Prepare vector artwork and Pantone codes; get the decoration quote against the locked SKU.
4. Week 5+ — approve proof, run bulk. Decoration proof approval starts the 7–15 working day production window.
5. Reorder or graduate. Reorders on the same SKU repeat quickly; brands that outgrow Tier 1 move to printing with a simple artwork migration — the bottle stays the same.
What to send for an accurate quote
– Capacity and applicator (dropper/pump/spray), with target size (1 oz / 30 ml, 2 oz / 60 ml, 3.4 oz / 100 ml).
– Quantity per order — MOQ and unit price both depend on it.
– Brand assets: vector logo, Pantone codes, print position sketch.
– Secondary packaging needs, if any.
– Your market — regulatory and shipping expectations differ by destination.
With those five items, the first reply (within one working day) can include real options instead of questions.
FAQ
Can I mix bottle colors in one order to test which sells?
Mixed-color programs are possible on selected stock lines; confirm the split and MOQ treatment at quotation rather than assuming one SKU = one color.
Do you offer labels, or only printing?
Labels are a Tier 1 route brands handle with their local printer, or we quote them as part of the program. Printing on glass (silk screen, hot stamp) starts at our decoration MOQ tiers.
Is 500 pcs really enough to start?
On selected blank stock items, yes — it is the entry tier. Decoration and boxes raise the baseline; the exact number for your SKU is confirmed at quotation, not before.
